Text 17 May 2 notes College … Worth it?

The one thing we supossedly need to make it in this world, College. The big point in someones life where you decide what you will become be a good student and go to school and earn your degree years later, finally having the satisfaction of paying 40K for a piece of paper with your name on it saying “congrats you did it, now for the hard part idiot… “

College at this point to me has been a slap in the face. The classes are not designed for you to actually learn anything, for the exception of the art history classes at Texas state which are stupendous may I add. I  learned nothing in core classes except what I was taught in high school which was a repeat of what I learned in middle school.

So I am personally paying thousands of dollars to get taught what I already knew. Thats really not what education should be. I have not learned anything in any of these classes that will help me in my career. The only thing I may have possibly learned by now is that maybe I need to get out of this “college” shenanigan before its too late. I know there are a lot of people I do not want to disappoint anyone who has faith in me and expects me to do good, but I feel I can focus more on what I should be doing and making myself if I lay off the classes, and pay off my debt now.

I am disappointed in American Education and the college routine and that you have to put yourself in immense debt to possibly have a better life. Some of the richest people in the world are college dropouts. it just depends on someones personal style and if they feel they are getting anything out of a college education. The problem also is anyone can be a professor or a teacher and anyone can get a teaching degree no matter how good or bad they are in their trade. The standards are so low for teachers it has to be one of the easiest jobs to attain a degree for.

I have learned more probably in specialty high school classes than in any other kinds of classes Ive ever attended.

College has honestly got to be one of the biggest wastes of time for an art major. The school in no way helps you get out to galleries or anything, and even if they do, you get into the better ones if you do the work on your own and you have a more personal relationship with the gallery director.

so I don’t know what your opinion is guys, but honestly, I am less than an inch away from dropping out if I get the job I’m going after right now. I can make things happen once I have that job…

I don’t know, what do you guys think??

Not until we are lost do we begin to understand ourselves.  ~Henry David Thoreau

People often say that this or that person has not yet found himself.  But the self is not something one finds, it is something one creates.  ~Thomas Szasz, “Personal Conduct,” The Second Sin, 1973
